MTA Subway

The New York City subway is the cheapest and fastest way to travel in the New York City area. The system also services Queens and Brooklyn, so you can get outside Manhattan and tour its surrounding neighborhoods.

Biking

Biking is a fun and affordable way to get around both Long Island and New York City. If you don’t have your own bike, New York City participates in Citi Bike, a popular bike-sharing program that allows you to rent bikes from hundreds of stations around Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Long Island Rail Road Train

The Long Island Rail Road is the easiest and fastest way to get from Manhattan to Long Island. The LIRR also has stations all throughout Long Island, making it convenient to explore other towns on the Island.

MTA Bus

The MTA Bus operates on Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. The bus can be a great alternative if you are looking to travel to locations that do not have subway stations. It’s also a good option for people who live on Long Island but do not have access to a car.

Airports, Trains and Buses

Just 20 minutes from Adelphi University, John F. Kennedy is the primary international airport serving New York City. Over 90 airlines operate out of JFK and offer nonstop and direct flights to and from all six inhabited continents.

LaGuardia Airport is about 30 minutes away from Adelphi University and eight miles from midtown Manhattan. The airport connects to more than 50 destinations, although the service is limited to cities within 1,500 miles.

While the LIRR allows travel within Long Island and to Manhattan, Amtrak gives you the opportunity to travel outside of NYC. Amtrak has routes to many other cities around the United States, such as Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

When traveling to and from New York, going by bus is a popular and inexpensive option. Dozens of companies, including Greyhound and Megabus, are based at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Located a short walk from Times Square in NYC, travel has never been easier. Tickets can be as low as $10 if you book far enough in advance!
